Today there are three remaining major axe producers in Sweden: S.A. Wetterlings in Storvik, Gränsfors Bruks AB in Gränsfors and Hultafors/Hults Bruk in Åby, outside of Norrköping.

Husqvarna, a Swedish company, sells axes which are in fact made by Hults Bruk or Wetterlings.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial portrait_url=”https://ancientpathworkshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Flag_of_Sweden.png” _builder_version=”4.2.2″ animation_style=”fold” animation_direction=”left” animation_intensity_fold=”20%”]

Why “Bruk”?

The Swedish term “bruk” means “works” and was an historical descriptor of large industrial companies. For example “bergsbruk” meaning mining works or “järnbruk” meaning ironworks.

Claiming heritage dating back to 1697, Hults Bruk is the oldest Swedish Axe producer. Absentee wealthy nobles owned the forge until the 1820s, when around that time the family Ekelund took over and ran it for the next 100 years.

Significant modernization was undertaken by Gunner Ekelund in 1887 and again in the 1930s.

Ownership has changes hands over the centuries and Hults Bruk was acquired by the Hultafors group in 1992.

Some of the best axes available come from Sweden. Gränsfors Bruks AB (Gransfors Bruk), Hultafors, Hults Bruk, Wetterlings and Husqvarna.

However, as will be explained below, the only true Swedish axe makers are Gransfors Bruk, Hults Bruk and Wetterlings. However, even Wetterlings is now closely affiliated with Gransfors Bruk and is listed a sister company.

From the Gransfors Bruk website regarding Wetterlings:

All production takes place in our axe forge in Storvik, just outside Gävle. The company started in 1880, and Wetterlings now exports axes to ten or so countries and also manufactures Gränsfors axes for Gränsfors Bruk.

Hults Bruk dates back to 1697 and is loocated in Norrkoping. Ownership of Hults Bruk has changed hands over the years. In 1992 Hults Bruk was sold to The Hultafors Group.

Husqvarna sells axes under their own brand, but they are made by either Hults Bruk or Wetterlings.

According to some sources, each of these Swedish ax makers sources their steel from Ovako AB.
