In round one smiths must forge a knife that fits exactly into a puzzle piece cutout. At first I thought this was gimmicky akin to forcing blacksmiths to create \u201ckeys\u2019 to unlock boxes to get their metal like in Episode 32 \u201cTomahawk and Bowie\u201d. But the missing puzzle piece is a beautiful knife profile reminiscent of Burt Foster\u2019s style.<\/p>\n

I think it is a unique challenge that really tests a smith\u2019s ability to forge on demand to an exacting shape. So I think this is an interesting first round for Forged in Fire.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m all about the axes and the finale weapon does not disappoint. The smiths have four days to craft a Japanese Ono. It\u2019s a kind of pole axe or battle axe. I wasn’t able to find more than one actual image of historical Ono’s.<\/p>\n
I did find several paintings of Samurai with axes.<\/p>\n

Logan’s Ono was rustic. Doug seemed pleased with the damage it did on the kill test. Jay mentions it is heavy and the wrap makes it hard to slide the hand down when chopping with it.<\/p>\n
Keaton was leagues ahead in fit and finish. The bronze cast hearts inset in the axe head were well executed. It performed on Doug’s kill test as well. The head design is interesting. It also has an integrated wedge to split the wood handle and keep it snug. There is also a pin going through the head affixing it to the shaft as well.<\/p>\n
Both Ono’s heads tended to roll upon impact but the judges don’t comment about this.<\/p>\n

The outcome never seemed in question. Both axes performed similarly so it came down to craftsmanship and balance.<\/p>\n

Great to see three season seven episodes in a row featuring an axe. It partly (partly mind you) makes up for the fact that there were zero axes in Forged in Fire: Beat the Judges.<\/p>\n

So I keep tabs on which episodes of Forged in Fire feature an axe. In well over one hundred of episodes of the show there have only been 16 so far in which an axe makes an appearance. Episode 31 of season 7 \"Titanium Smackdown\" is a Forged in Fire Episode featuring an axe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No axes appear in the first two rounds of competition. They did things a little backwards from usual, with smith's being charged with forging titanium handles before creating a blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The finale weapon is the Horseman's Tabar: a one handed Indo-Persian axe. The example Tabar in the show looks a little janky to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Horseman's Tabar, according to the show, is a weapon used by Indian Calvary from the 16th-18th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don\u2019t believe in metal handles on axes. It was a parameter and for a weapon it probably makes sense. Also a parameter was a hidden dagger in the haft that doubled as a pommel for the axe and the handle of the dagger. On the one hand it is kinda cool. I also get that it is historically accurate, but it seems impractical and I wouldn\u2019t want a dagger falling out of my axe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
